Quality Management System (QMS) Course Outline

INTRODUCTION:

A quality management system (QMS) has been referred to as business common sense.  It is a systematic approach to achieving the quality objectives of the business. This training course is based on the international standard for QMS - ISO 9001:2008 and also introduces other pertinent international management system standards.

This course is designed to be comprehensive, interactive and practical.  It involves:

  • Training owners/managers in QMS
  • Training staff members in process management
  • Development of QMS documentation
  • Risk management
  • Assessment of current operations (including in-plant visits of some businesses)
  • Sensitization on other management systems: Energy (ISO 50001), Environment (ISO 14001), Food Safety (IS0 22000), Occupational Health & Safety (OHSAS 18001).
  • Identifying strategies for common issues
  • Preparing action plans for improvement

GOAL:

To boost the competitiveness of micro and small businesses in St. Lucia

OBJECTIVE:

To increase micro and small business persons awareness and applicability of quality management practices, thereby enabling them to make strategically informed business decisions.

STRATEGY

Participants will be assigned to groups according to sectors. Group participants volunteer to use one company as an example for group activities.  The output of group activities will include:

  • Quality policy and objectives
  • Risk register
  • Quality plan
  • Quality Manual
  • Process maps, procedures and work instructions

TARGET GROUP: Agro-processors- e.g.  jams, spices etc.,  Beauty & Wellness, Construction, Early Childhood Services, Automotive Services, ICT, Tourism, Manufacturers - Bottled water, Garments, Furniture, Household products and other micro and small businesses.

The course targets specifically the owners and managers of these businesses but includes a training component for the staff of these businesses.

Maximum number of participants is twenty (20).

  • Drafted the following pertaining to their businesses:
    • Quality policy and objectives
    • Risk Registers
    • Quality plan
    • Quality Manual
    • Process maps, procedures and work instructions
    • Action plan for improvement (Individual business)

PREREQUISITE: NONE

CERTIFICATION:  Certificates of participation will be issued.

MONITORING AND EVALUATION:

The responsible/coordinating agency would utilize information from the participants' feedback, facilitators' feedback as well as their own monitoring measures to determine the effectiveness and value of the course.  Lessons learnt would be used for improvement.
