World Consumer Rights Day 2014 - Fix Our Phone Rights!

As customary, on March 15 every year, Saint Lucia joins the rest of world in observance of World Consumer Rights Day.

This year, World Consumer Rights Day will be celebrated under the theme: "Fix Our Phone Rights", which highlights the problems and challenges faced by mobile phone subscribers. 


In Saint Lucia, a series of activities have been planned for this international event. These include:

1.) Radio/Television Talk Show


Radio/Television Talk Show Programmes on Radio Saint Lucia's Ninety (90) Minutes on Monday March 10 , 2014 and on Choice Television's Hot Button on Wednesday March 12, 2014 respectively. The panel includes

representatives from Lime, Digicel, the Eastern Caribbean Telecommunications Authority (ECTEL), the National

Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (NTRC), the National Consumers Association (NCA) and the

Consumer Affairs Department (CAD).


2.) Primary School Lectures

Primary School lectures began on Tuesday, February 11th and ends on March 4, 2014 at the following schools:  


- Boguis Combined
- Vide Bouteille Primary
- Grand-Riviere Combined
- Soufriere Combined
- Ave Maria Primary
- Ciceron Combined
- Pierrot Combined
- RC Boys Primary
- Vigier Combined
- Millet Primary

3.) Dissemination of Consumer Information


On March 11th, 2014 CAD will disseminate a power point presentation on the Mobile Phone situation in Saint Lucia to public servants via Government's Zimbra Email System. 

4.) Information Booth


An information booth will be set up in front of the old Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (C.I.B.C) on the William Peter

Boulevard on Friday, March 14th 2014. At this activity, consumer protection agencies namely: the NCA, CAD; and telecommunications agency representatives such as ECTEL, Lime and Digicel will be present to inform consumers about their rights and responsibilities as it pertains to the Mobile Phone sector in Saint Lucia. This will be done through the distribution of flyers and other memorabilia items as well as a one and one conversation with consumers in attendance. Also, the Visually Impaired Musical Band will be in attendance to entertain shoppers and passers-by.

Specific Objectives of the above Activities are:


a.) Join the rest of the World on March 15, 2014 to observe and celebrate World Consumer Rights Day.
b.) Heighten public awareness on issues that impact consumers.
c.) Educate the public on consumer issues generally and on their rights and responsibilities in particular.
d.) Create the platform for the dissemination of information, so that   consumers can make informed choices and Saint Lucia becoming a nation of discerning consumers.
e.) Collaborate with non-governmental organizations and government institutions in promoting consumer interests and safeguarding consumers from Shoddy Goods and Shabby Services.
